It's tomato canning time

Today we picked tomatoes, green beans, eggplant, cucumbers, zucchini and banana peppers.
The tomatoes numbered in the 20-30 range and we picked enough green beans for at least two meals but there's plenty more for later in the week.We also canned our first tomatoes of the season putting up 5 quarts of whole tomatoes.
The pictures below show the before and after of how many tomatoes it required to make the 5 quarts. Also what we picked today is not in the picture. That will easily replace what was on the counter. I was hoping for a red harvest and so far it's been very good.

Pickings from June 27

Today the star of the garden is Blue Lake green beans. Picked half a bucket full and left many more for the next picking. We also picked tomatoes and cucumbers. Tomatoes are coming in at about a dozen a day and we are close to our first canning of whole tomatoes. We are also close to another canning of pickles.
Rain would be good but I think hot temperatures in the 100's will be what we get instead.

Picking update June 24

We have been in Charlotte visiting Austin,  the past three days visiting and exploring one of our favorite cities. We had great food as you would expect but we also were able to go to two farmers markets, Yorkmount and Atherton Mills. Yorkmount was huge with fresh vegetables, meats, breads and plants in abundance. Atherton was smaller more upscale with cheeses, roasted coffee and gourmet pickles to name a few of the products we saw. There were also food trucks there serving fresh garden to table foods.
Our picking today consisted of a dozen tomatoes, green beans, banana peppers, zucchini, eggplant, a bowl full of cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers. See the pics below.
We have a surplus of eggplant, zucchini, and jalapenos to give away so email me if you're in the area and would like some.

Weekly update

We picked eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers, green beans, cherry tomatoes and bell peppers today. We picked two pretty decent sized tomatoes too. Can't wait for the first 'mater sandwich of the season!
We are also planting another crop of Blue Lake green beans which will hopefully be ready in early August.

It's Pickle time

The cucumbers are doing well, so much in fact we are canning our homemade pickles. This is always one of the highlights of the season because once we start with pickles I know tomatoes are just around the corner.
Also the corn is finished for us. We harvested almost 50 ears from a bed measuring 12 feet by 8 feet. That was impressive. Also, we will replant more green beans this week to be ready for the beginning of August hopefully.
See the pictures below of the canning.

June 12 Picking update

We loved the rain the last two days, we had over 3 inches.
Today's picking included eggplant, zucchini, cucumber, corn, roma tomatoes, and squash.
It was good to see the Roma tomatoes because they usually precede the other tomatoes by two weeks. Can't wait for the red harvest.

Garden update June 9

With the rain early in the week it was good to go several days without watering but we had to water today. The garden continues to grow, see the pics below. The lettuce raised bed has been replanted with banana peppers so we can make pickled banana peppers. Sliced they go great with salads as a garnish.
We hopefully will accumulate enough cucumbers to make pickles in the next week or so. This past year was the first year since I started gardening 25 years ago, that we ran out of homemade pickles and had to buy from the grocery store. We will try to replenish our supply this year.
This is the calm before the storm, if the tomatoes continue to grow as I think they will, we could be looking at a very red harvest.
Today we picked- Cucumbers, Eggplant, Zucchini, Green Beans, Corn, Squash, Red Chard, Cherry, Tomatoes, Bell Peppers, Banana Peppers and Jalapenos.

Anybody want to venture a guess what's for supper?

June 4 Picking

Today it rained in the morning so we weren't able to pick until the afternoon. The best news is the corn has arrived. We picked 14 ears and there are plenty more for later in the week. Look for some corn recipes in the "Recipe" section of the blog to appear soon.

We also picked egg plant, squash, cucumbers, bell peppers and jalapenos.
